Mission and History

Healthy Philadelphia resulted from a 3:1 overwhelming approval by Philadelphia voters in every ward and council district for the ballot referendum:

“Shall Section 5-300 of the Philadelphia Home Rule Charter be amended to declare that because health care is an essential safeguard of human life and dignity, the City of Philadelphia Health Department shall prepare a plan for universal health care that permits everyone in the City of Philadelphia to obtain decent health care?”

The Philadelphia Home Rule Charter was subsequently changed to reflect the language from the ballot referendum and the Department of Public Health was instructed to develop a plan for universal health care. Thus Healthy Philadelphia was formed for that exact pursuit.

Healthy Philadelphia’s mission will and always be

“To make high quality health care available to all Philadelphians by bringing together the community, health care providers, businesses, government, and grassroots leaders to develop coordinated and integrated systems of care.”
